Strong social connections are one of the most important contributors to healthy aging. Staying active, engaged, and connected with others supports physical health, improves emotional well-being, and helps create a greater sense of purpose throughout every stage of life.
This July, Elevation Health is proud to recognize Social Wellness Month, an annual initiative that encourages meaningful relationships, reduces loneliness, and highlights the importance of social support. Strong social connections help people manage stress, build self-confidence, and improve both physical and mental health.
As humans, we're naturally wired for connection, and that need doesn't diminish with age. In fact, it often becomes even more important as life circumstances change.
The Health Impact of Social Connection
Research shows that up to 40% of older adults experience loneliness, with adults over the age of 60 reporting higher rates of both loneliness and social isolation. More importantly, the health consequences are significant. A lack of social connection has been linked to health risks comparable to obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption.
Individuals with limited social connections face increased risks, including:
• 29% higher risk of heart disease
• 32% higher risk of stroke
• 50% higher risk of dementia
• Earlier onset of chronic conditions such as diabetes and dementia
Research also suggests that maintaining an active social life may help slow biological aging, positively influencing longevity and healthy aging.
Experts now encourage people to prioritize social wellness just as they would nutrition, exercise, and quality sleep. Chronic loneliness has even been compared to the health impact of smoking 15 cigarettes per day, underscoring just how essential human connection is to overall wellness.
Creating Communities Through Wellness
At Elevation Health, we believe wellness is about more than physical fitness. Our programs are designed to create opportunities for movement, engagement, and meaningful social interaction that help participants build healthier, more connected lives.
Our Active Aging programs combine functional fitness, educational experiences, and social engagement to help older adults become stronger, healthier, and more connected to their communities. By making exercise enjoyable and interactive, we create environments where participants look forward to both the workout and the relationships they build along the way.
Some of our favorite Active Aging programs include:
• You're Never Too Old To… - This progressive educational series encourages participants to explore exciting new experiences they may never have considered, from mountain biking and camping to competing in a triathlon or trying powerlifting.
• Field Day - Inspired by the excitement of elementary school field days, this program brings participants together through nostalgic games and friendly competition, including balloon tosses, Zumba, three-legged races, and other interactive activities.
• Workout Bingo - A creative twist on a traditional workout, participants complete exercises as numbers are called, racing to complete a Bingo card while staying active and having fun with friends.
Invest in Your Social Wellness
As we recognize Social Wellness Month, remember that investing in your social well-being is just as important as caring for your physical health.
Join a fitness class, participate in a wellness program, take a walk with friends, volunteer in your community, or simply make time to reconnect with someone you haven't spoken to in a while. Every conversation, shared activity, and new relationship contributes to a healthier, happier future.
At Elevation Health, we're committed to creating wellness experiences that help people move better, feel better, and connect with others because healthy aging isn't just about adding years to life, it's about adding life to those years.
